Raila Amolo Odinga is a Kenyan legal practitioner, politician, and former Prime Minister of Kenya.
Raila Amolo Odinga Biography
Raila Odinga served as a member of parliament for Langata from 1992 to 2013. He was the Minister of Energy from 2001 to 2002 and the minister for roads, public works and housing from 2003 to 2005. In 2018, the African Union Commission appointed Raila Odinga as the High Representative for Infrastructure Development. Raila Odinga was born on 7th January 1945 to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Juma Odinga at the Anglican Church Missionary Society Hospital. Raila Odinga’s father served as the first Vice President of Kenya under President Jomo Kenyatta.
Raila Odinga spent two years at the University of Leipzig in Germany. He won a scholarship that sent him to the Technical School in Magdeburg. He graduated with a diploma in 1970. In the 1970s and the 1980s, he was politically active and supported government reforms in Kenya. He was accused of plotting against President Daniel Arap Moi in 1982. He was thus imprisoned for six years without trial. After his release, he was arrested two times for campaigning against the one-party rule. He then sought refuge in Norway in the year 1991. Raila Odinga was however elected as a member of the National Assembly under the banner of the Forum for the restoration of Democracy-Kenya(FORD) which was led by his Father. He started to have struggled with the party’s leaders after his father passed away in 1994. He later joined the National Democratic Party(NDP)
He is married to Ida Odinga and they are blessed with 5 children; Fidel Odinga, Winnie Odinga, Rosemary Odinga, and Raila Odinga Jr.
